G7 Nations Struggling To Agree on Coal Phase-Out

On April 30, the G7 ministerial culminated in Italy to make public details of agreements reached by the countries on key matters related to energy transition, climate finance & enhanced climate ambition. It appears, the G7 countries have failed to agree on a specific timeline to phase out coal despite pressure from the international community. The communique used ambiguous language that allows for an extension of coal use beyond 2030.

'Carbon Dioxide Removal' Falling Short for Climate Goals

New study by Nature Climate Change found that current plans of 'Carbon Dioxide Removal (CDR)' from the atmosphere are insufficient to meet Paris Agreement goals - with significant gap between the amount of CDR needed and that currently planned for. (The report estimate total human-induced GHG emissions have reached 60bn tonnes per year, of which CDR currently removes approx 3bn.)

UN Loss & Damage Fund's Historic First Meeting Held

The board of the 'UN Loss & Damage Fund' met for the first time between April 30 April & May 2 in Abu Dhabi. The board had 12 & 14 members from developed & developing countries respectively; & will be hosted by the World Bank at least, temporarily despite some scepticism. The fund has so far received $661 million from 19 countries; far short of the estimated $1 trillion per year that will be needed by 2050.
