Year 2024 Week 25 Anushthatri Sharma
Hi,

Hope you are well ?

June this far has been peculiar, to say the least. And this newsletter journal makes the case !
We elected a climate scientist to power (first of its kind), evacuated a complete island due to climate change (another first of its kind), while still not being able to find consensus on several finer aspects of UN inter-governmental effort in climate action (definitely not a first of its kind).

All in the same two weeks !

Regards,

Harish

UN 'Bonn Climate Talks' Reveal COP29 Challenges

The Bonn Climate Change Conference 2024 concluded on 13th June with minimal progress, highlighting significant challenges ahead of COP29 in Baku. Major issues included divergent views on the New Collective Quantified Goal (NCQG) for climate finance & mistrust hindering the Mitigation Work Programme (MWP). Developing nations demanded increased climate finance & support for loss and damage, while developed countries pushed for broader financial responsibility and stronger mitigation targets.

Panama 1st Country To Evacuate Island Due to Climate Change

Panama is evacuating Gardi Sugdub, making it the first nation to relocate an entire island community due to climate change. Around 300 Guna families are being moved to the mainland as rising sea levels and saltwater intrusion threaten their island home. The government estimates relocation costs at $1.2 billion, reflecting the severe impacts of climate change on coastal populations.

Mexico Elects Climate Scientist as President

Claudia Sheinbaum, a climate scientist & former Mexico City mayor has been elected into the President's office on 3rd June. With a background in environmental engineering & ex-contributor to IPCC 2007 Report (the same year it was awarded the Nobel Peace Price), Sheinbaum has championed renewables & public transport reforms in her past avatars. Her rise in the Mexico's political system brings unique expertise to global climate efforts, with her biggest challenges including Mexico's fossil fuel dependence & her previous administration's policies that she is inheriting.
