Your Climate Action Diary - 60

Year 2024 Week 14 Anushthatri Sharma
Hi,

Hope you are well.

It surely feels like we are in a place now, where renewables (and not fossils) is seen as the future of energy. And this is happening, despite our failure to put in words a commitment of 'phasing out of fossils' at the biggest climate conferences we have.

It appears that the socio-political & financial forces against fossil appear to be stronger for this brief moment than those in its favour.

Would you say this brings hope? Give it a thought. Regards,

Harish

[ A big Shout-Out to Sonam Wangchuk's 21 Day Climate-Fast from 6th March to 26th March & the issues around climate, ecology, indigenous knowledge & governance that he brought on the table.

Germany to Close Coal Plant

Germany will shut down seven of its lignite(brown coal)-fired power plant units, totaling 3.1 GW, by March end. It is part of its transition away from coal & assures no impact on supply security. Initially postponed due to an energy crisis brought about by the Russia-Ukraine conflict that forced Germany to temporarily re-open the coal plants in 2022-2023, these closures aim to conserve natural gas amid supply concerns.

New York Breaks Renewable Energy Records

New York achieved new records in renewable energy generation with wind generating 12% of load (2,176 MW) on March 9 and solar contributing 21% of load (3,832 MW) on March 12, according to NYISO. The state aims to triple its clean energy supply by 2040 to achieve an emission-free electric system. Rich Dewey, NYISO's CEO, emphasized the need for increased generation and transmission to meet rising demand and ensure grid reliability
