Investments in fossil fuels by governments of G20 countries reached new heights last year, even before the energy crisis began & despite the worsening impacts of the climate crisis and their pledge in 2009 to phase out “inefficient” subsidies. The G20 group of nations provided nearly US$200 billion in support of fossil fuels in 2021
At the UN climate summit in Egypt, world leaders are expected to talk about measures to combat climate change. Only 25 nations have submitted their ambitious national climate plans so far. (i) Reducing emissions, (ii) assisting nations in their preparation and response to climate change, & (iii) securing financial and technical assistance for these initiatives for developing nations will be the three key areas of focus for COP27.
The EPA began a $27 billion green bank to offer grants to disadvantaged communities around the United States, to deploy low or zero-emissions projects. The administration's larger campaign to address environmental injustice and prevent climate change includes the Greenhouse Gas Reduction Fund.
