Electricity generated from hydro-power is the largest source of renewable electricity in the world!!
In 2021, the total global electricity produced from hydro-power was 4,410,978 GWh.
It accounted for 15.47% of global electricity mix.
Electricity generated from hydro-power has doubled (101%) between 1990 ( 2,190,906 GWh ) and 2021 ( 4,410,978 GWh ).
During the same period, its share in the global electricity mix remained relatively constant - only moving between 18% (1990) and 15.47% (2021) - averaging about 17%.
This indicates that the growth in addition of new hydro power globally is at the moment, in sync with the increasing generation of electricity from all sources.
Electricity generated from hydro is the largest non-fossil and renewable source of electricity in India, at the moment..
In fact, it has increased by 127% between 1990 (71,655 GWh) and 2021 (162,441 GWh).
However, it must be noted, that within India, it has failed to keep up with the growth in other forms of electricity generated in the country. Its share in the national electricity mix has dropped from 25% in 1990 to 9.93% in 2021.
